I’m no hair expert, but through my years of box-dyes followed by going to a salon for professional hair care I have picked up a thing or two.
Box dyes work great to provide colour on a budget, at the expense of the health of your hair, not to mention making it harder for you to change your hair colour after you commit. On top of all things, with box dyes, layer after layer of it you never know the colour you will get or how different dyes will react with previous ones…this can lead to some pretty horrendous hair situations.
Believe me, I’ve made the fatal decision of box-dying my hair red and then struggling to get rid of that red tone from my hair, it didn’t matter whether I dyed my hair as dark as I could, dyed it purple, brown and bleach, the box red never quite left my hair. That is, until I finally sought professional help. I have transitioned my hair from a red-brown to blonde, thanks to my stylist. It looks amazing and my hair feels just as nourished as before I even bleached my hair.
Professional stylists know what they are doing, this is why they are called “professionals” and they rightfully deserve that title. Just look at what my stylist was able to do for my hair:

Before and After…note that in the before photo you can still see where box dye was used (about halfway through my hair and down)- and this is after multiple colour corrections
Mind you the before was 7 months after my first bleaching treatment, and only discovering purple shampoo and conditioner fairly recently to help get rid of the brassy tones. Many people don’t wait this long to go back to finish going fully blonde, but it worked best for me since my hair is naturally quite dry and I need to frequently put oil on it after a shower to keep it from becoming a frizzy mess.
Regardless, box-dying my hair was never as healthy as it is now that I go to a professional, never box-dying again! Not to mention spending that little extra money on a professional look helps me feel so much better about myself and the pampering goes a long way into my self-confidence.
Hope this might help anybody debating whether to spend money on a stylist vs box-dying their hair!
Cheers!
Jessica
